Dress Code
At Shenley Brook End we do not have a uniform, we have a 'Dress Code'. It is not as relaxed as some schools or colleges, and it is not as strict as some schools or colleges, so it is our dress code. The dress code is there to ensure a certain standard of dress. We want students to dress "smart casual". We appreciate "smart casual" changes with time and fashion. Therefore, we do review this dress code, and we have reviewed it for September 2026 start.
We expect students to stick to the dress code. If they do not, we will send students home to change, no matter where they live.
The way we dress does not mean we will work harder. The dress code is about having a dress policy that is not too relaxed or strict and allows students a degree of freedom compared to a uniform policy. Therefore, the dress code encourages students to take a more mature approach to the way they dress. If a student cannot follow the Dress Code, it shows their lack of commitment to the Sixth Form.

The way you dress is important. Students who dress smartly are focused, show pride in being a member of our Sixth Form and act as role models for younger students. We expect Sixth Form students to be smartly dressed; here is a list of what students can wear and not wear:
What is smart casual?
- Trousers - of varying colours are okay as fashion does change a little
- Jeans – plain colours, no ripped or baggy (hanging down below the waistline)
- Smarter, more tailored plain cargos are allowed
- Skirts of a reasonable length
- Polo shirts
- Plain t-shirts with no large logos
- Blouses/shirts
- Cardigans and jumpers (plain pullover sweatshirts or cotton/woollen)
- Suits
- Corduroy material dresses/trousers.
- Dresses of a reasonable length
- Shorts of chino material (in hot weather)
- Plain shoes/boots
- Trainers are allowed from September 2026 – but remember, can they be smarter ones so not dirty or mucky
- Piercings in the ears and nose only
- Leggings if worn with a smart top – with no mid-riff showing.
- Canvas shoes
- Hoodies – that are plain, and you take off in school
These are not smart casual:
- No Crocs or sliders at all
- Shorts (unless in hot weather – but no jersey/sports/denim material shorts)
- Hoodies – with HUGE logos
- Joggers
- Gym Wear
- Clothing with large logos
- Jackets or coats worn inside.
- Hats worn inside – that includes durags
- Skirts/Dresses above end of fingertip length from knee
- Thigh-high boots or super high heels
- Spaghetti strap tops
- Crop Tops
- Leggings - if worn with crop tops and therefore are very revealing
- Extreme hair colours
The Sixth Form at Shenley Brook End School believe that students are significant role models and their appearance must match this expectation. Any students not adhering to the dress code will be asked to go home and change and will have to catch up on any work missed.
There is a great deal of choice to what students can wear, and we do try to keep in mind the ever-changing fashion. With consideration to your environment, working ethos and a sensible manner, these issues should not become an item for discussion.
